How to Compress a PDF Under 2 MB or 4 MB on Mac and iPhone

By VisaPDF · Reviewed October 5, 2026

A percentage reduction is not the same as meeting an upload limit. For a form that requires a PDF below 2 MB or 4 MB, check the size of the exported file, not just a compression estimate.

Start with the best original

Keep a separate original so you can change settings without accumulating quality loss. A PDF made from phone photos behaves differently from one exported by a word processor: scans often contain large images, while a text-based PDF may already be compact. There is no compression setting that guarantees every document will fit.

Choose a target, then process a copy

Open VisaPDF on Mac, iPhone, or iPad and choose Compress. Import the original PDF, select the appropriate size profile or a custom limit, and choose a compression level. Process the copy, check the result’s actual size, and export it. Leave some room below a strict limit rather than relying on a rounded size display.

Read the output before accepting it

Compare the original and result at the same zoom. Check fine print, numbers, signatures, and any stamps that matter. Inspect several pages, including the most detailed one. A large reduction that destroys those details is not a successful result for paperwork.

What to try if the PDF stays too large

Try a stronger setting from the original. If your source is a blurry photo with a large background, rescan the complete page more cleanly. Do not remove required content. Splitting is useful only when the destination accepts multiple files; a single upload slot may require one combined PDF.

When to stop compressing

If the complete document cannot fit while remaining legible, check the destination’s alternative submission instructions. Repeated compression is not a reliable way to keep making a PDF smaller. Keep the readable original available rather than overwriting it.

Free download and local processing

VisaPDF includes one free processing use. Unlimited processing requires a one-time Pro purchase, with the price shown in your regional App Store. There is no subscription. The app runs on Apple devices; this guide is not an online upload tool.

Common questions

Does compression preserve all quality?

Not necessarily. Stronger image compression can reduce detail. Review the exported document before using it.

Can VisaPDF guarantee any PDF will fit under 2 MB?

No. Results depend on the original, page count, image content, and settings. Check the final size and readability.
