IRCC PDF File Too Large? Check the Limit and Reduce the Size

By VisaPDF · Reviewed October 5, 2026

An oversized file can block an otherwise ready application. Start with the limit shown beside your upload field, then reduce a copy of your document and inspect the saved result.

Check your account before choosing 4 MB

IRCC’s published table currently lists 4 MB per file for the secure account and 5 MB for the IRCC Portal, including its new version. A country label alone does not identify your upload rules. Follow the instructions in your own application if they differ from a preset.

A practical compression workflow

Keep your original PDF. In VisaPDF, choose Compress, import a copy, and select a size profile that matches your upload field or set a custom limit. Start with a less aggressive compression setting. Process the file, check its actual output size, and open the saved PDF before uploading. If it is still oversized, try a stronger setting on the original copy.

If several documents must share one field

Check which pages the application asks you to include. Arrange and merge those pages before checking the combined size. Individually small PDFs can exceed the limit once joined. Do not assume that splitting the file is acceptable when the field expects one combined document.

When compression is not enough

Avoid repeatedly compressing an already degraded copy. If a scan contains large margins or poor focus, make a cleaner scan of the complete page. Do not omit required pages or make text unreadable just to hit a number. If the complete readable document still cannot fit, consult the portal’s instructions for the next step.

Before you upload

Compare page counts with the original. Inspect small text, signatures, stamps, and page edges at a readable zoom. A smaller file is not necessarily a usable file. Upload the checked copy and confirm that the portal shows the intended document.

Common questions

Is every IRCC upload limited to 4 MB?

No. The limit depends on the account and upload instructions. Check the field in your application before choosing a compression target.

Will VisaPDF submit the document for me?

No. VisaPDF processes documents on your device. You review and upload the resulting file yourself.
